Improved Recovery of Overloaded Anaerobic Batch Reactors by Graphene Oxide

Anaerobic digestion reactors may suffer from acidification when overloading occurs. Carbon-based materials are amended to mitigate the souring effects of excessive loading. This study aims test if graphene oxide (GO) helps overloaded anaerobic recover faster. Batch tests were conducted following a fed-batch strategy at different GO levels (0, 10, and 20 mg per g volatile solid (VS)) inoculum substrate ratios (ISRs) 2, 1, 0.75 based on VS. While an ISR 2 was initially applied, decreased 1 in two parallel sets experiments simulate conditions fourth feeding cycle. Lastly, restored all assays. First-order model kinetic constants confirmed significant (p < 0.05) effect by third feed on. Although GO-amended assays did not alleviate effects, during final phase reached values similar or even above controls (without GO). Moreover, concentration up mgGO/gVS had no impact FOS/TAC. Overall, this broadens understanding design operation with GO.
